A signal is an observable clue that something changed at an account. It can improve timing, but it never proves that somebody wants to buy. This guide shows how to evaluate buying signals without making that leap.

A buying signal is a public, first-party, or consent-safe clue that an account's situation may have changed. The change can concern the team, financing, stack, market, or behavior. The clue never creates an automatic reason to contact: first decide whether it is a research cue, a corroborated clue, or a verified public event, then apply the source and mention rules for that mode.

The terms overlap. Intent data usually means third-party data about topic research and content consumption. A useful classification describes what evidence permits, not how exciting an event looks. A private or sensitive behavior is a research cue and should not appear in outreach. A practical program tracks only events that map to a defined offer, owner, and evidence policy. The modes below are conservative defaults, not permanent labels: source, attribution, recency, jurisdiction, and context can move the same event into research, outreach, or stop.
